A couple of hours before cooking, remove enough tots to fill your waffle maker in one single layer. For me that number is around 30 tots, but waffle makers vary.
Place the uncooked tots on a plate or a couple of paper towels to thaw.
Two hours later, pre-heat your waffle maker on high heat.
While the waffle maker is pre-heating, toss your uncooked tots with 1 tablespoon vegetable or canola oil and the seasonings of your choice.
Add tots to waffle maker once it is ready.
Close lid and firmly press it down to smash all the tots.
Cook for about 8 minutes or until the waffle maker stops steaming.
Double check that the waffle seems crispy. If it's not crispy but it's still firm enough to lift out of the waffle maker, you might want to carefully flip the waffle over to cook it a bit longer. If your waffle maker has hot spots, it might cook unevenly and flipping it over might help to brown it evenly.
Enjoy on the side of eggs and bacon or cut it up and use it as the "bread" in a sandwich.
